Rough Guides Top 10 Countries
We’ll second that!
Well it just goes to show, you don’t need glorious sunshine to find yourself classed as a top ten destination. Our wee country’s just come second in the Rough Guides Top Ten Countries!
And it just so happens that the team at Rough Guides couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the Scottish Highlands, and Glencoe was one of their favourite spots – it’s easy to see why.
Only a 40-minute drive from our front door, you’ll find The Jacobite Steam Train – known in Potter world as the ‘Hogwarts Express’. And with the 20th anniversary of the first ever Harry Potter book coming up this year, they reckon there’s never been a better excuse to visit… Not that you’d need an excuse.
The Rough Guide write about the Great Glen in Glencoe that turns purple with heather, and how even though some spots have got a constant flow of tourists, you’ll only need to travel for half an hour to find yourself completely alone.
Beating Portugal, Canada and Nicaragua to the number two spot, Scotland came just under India in the top 10 countries to visit list. The writers at Rough Guides commented on the evolving food and drinks scene in Scotland too, with “Glasgow one of the best places to head for culinary experimentation, while you’ll find bottles from Scottish microbreweries at even the most remote pubs.”
